Shannon Baker is a native Texan who is entering her 18th
year of educational service. Shannon
performed with recognition as a Kindergarten through12th
grade educator and leader in several mid-size districts. Shannon
has multiple PreKindergarten-12 certifications that include
Superintendent, Principal, Learning Resource Specialist, English
as a Second Language, English Language Arts, Reading, Health, Special
Education, Librarian, and Music. Shannon
has over 12 years of teaching/classroom experience in a variety
of areas ranging from English Language Arts (ELA) &
Reading, Career and Technical Education,
Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language (ESL)
Education.
Most recently, Shannon served as the
Managing Director of the Curriculum Division for the State of Texas. While at the Texas Education Agency, Shannon
managed and supervised the core and
enrichment elements as well as foundation programs. Core
programs included math, science, social studies and language
arts curriculum. The enrichment and programmatic elements
included, but were not limited to, languages other than English,
Bilingual Education, Reading First, Accelerated Reading
Instruction/Accelerated Math Instruction, Fine Arts, Physical
Education/Health, Career and Technical Education, Technology
Applications, Response to Intervention, Advanced Academics,
College & Career Readiness, Early Childhood and the Texas Spain
Initiative.
According to Ms. Baker, her goal for the Agency’s Curriculum
Division during her tenure was to provide information and
resources to ensure academic success of all students in Texas public schools. Shannon has had
numerous occasions to successfully share with Texas educators and leaders the state and
national level direction regarding current trends, data, and
best practices in education.
Throughout her career,
Shannon has served at the district level in such
capacities as Director of Federal Programs/NCLB, Curriculum, &
Magnet. At the campus level, Shannon
performed a variety of roles from Engineering Technology
Academic Team Leader to ESL/ELA Department Chair and Assistant
Principal. Plus, Shannon
has had the opportunity to mentor and instruct adult learners on
a variety of topics such as Adult Basic Education for Second
Language Learners and mastery of educator certification ExCET/TExES
preparation.
Shannon
has enjoyed involvement in many community organizations ranging
from Boy’s Club Basketball Coach, Chamber of Commerce Functions,
to Junior League membership. Within her educational career,
Shannon has been nominated at the campus, district, national,
and international level as a distinguished educator (Campus
Teacher of the Year, Texas Association of Bilingual Educators
(TABE) District English as a Second Language ESL Teacher of the
Year, and one of 48 internationally selected educators nominated
to the Oxford Round Table for Second Language Best Practices)
In addition, Shannon has
had the honor to have the Office of the Governor request her
leadership at a variety of forums and presentations.
